Most people who seek therapy are looking for a therapist who feels like the right fit. It is important to find someone the client is comfortable confiding in and who has expertise in the areas which they are concerned about.

I am a very experienced therapist who offers confidential and professional services. I have been in private practice providing psychotherapy since 1980. My referrals come mostly from previous clients or professionals in fields of healthcare, medicine, law or education. My longstanding affiliation as a part time faculty member at the University of San Diego has provided me with information and resources on current trends and research in the field. My experiences as a teacher in graduate school, a consultant to agencies and private businesses, and many years as a therapist in private practice have given me tremendous opportunities to learn about and work with the issues clients bring to therapy. My approach is strength based. I look for what works and how we can do a better job of managing our lives.

This is a highly individualized approach which attempts to find balance between the needs of the individuals, the organization and the company culture.

Biography

Dr. Larry Chamow has been in private practice in Carlsbad since 1980. He specializes in working with people with relationship problems in the therapy setting where they can be seen as individuals, couples or families. Dr. Chamow holds a Doctorate Degree in Psychology from the United States International University in San Diego and a Master’s Degree in Counseling from San Francisco State University. He is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

Dr. Chamow has been on the faculty in the Dept. of Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of San Diego since 1991. He has also taught Couples Therapy at the Calif. School for Professional Psychology in San Diego. He has trained therapists and consulted for agencies and businesses throughout Southern California and other parts of the country. He has presented at numerous national conferences on couples therapy. supervision, therapy techniques, and adolescents. He has published several articles in national publications and is co-author of two books Essential Skills in Family Therapy and Essential Assessment Skills in Couple and Family Therapy. Both are published by Guildford Press.

Dr. Chamow is a clinical professor at the University of San Diego. He is a fellow and an approved supervisor with the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. He is a member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists where he received their distinguished clinician award for 2020. He has worked as a clinician, professor, trainer, consultant and administrator in the mental health field. He has also worked as a consultant and executive coach for small businesses and their executives.

My Treatment Approach
My approach to working with clients is to find what works best for them. Each person, each case is unique and should be treated with concern, thoroughness and planning. I use an integrative, systemic approach to treatment and utilize techniques from a variety of theories including: emotionally focused, mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral, internal family systems, solution focused therapy, experiential and narrative therapy.

Individual Therapy
Therapy is a very personal experience. My approach is to tailor the therapy to the needs of the individual. After an initial assessment, a treatment plan and approach will be formulated to fit each person. We will attempt to reduce the presenting symptoms as well as look at the underlying problems. My collaborative approach will include the client in determining the frequency and length of treatment.
Couple and Marital Therapy
My approach to working with couples is to treat the relationship. I offer an approach that works to find tools to manage problems and increase effective communication. Typically, I ask couples to commit to four initial sessions. The first is a conjoint session where the problems are identified and discussed. We then have an individual meeting with each person and conclude with a conjoint meeting. At that time, I will provide an assessment which looks at the strengths and weaknesses in the relationship. Normally, one of three courses is taken.
1. Some tools are provided and therapy is concluded.
2. Therapy is continued an on going basis.
3. It is determined that couples therapy is not the best approach and other types of treatment are discussed.
Family Therapy
The complexity of families has always fascinated me and is what drew me into this field. After an assessment, families will be treated using an approach which considers the needs of each person and treats the whole family. My approach will look at finding practical solutions to problems.
Clinical Supervision
Supervision can be provided for the clinician who seeks help in further developing their' clinical practice skills. Supervision can be valuable at various stages in the therapist‘s development. Non-licensed therapists can use supervision as an essential aspect of their teaming process where they can discuss cases and explore self of the therapist issues. Experienced therapists can use supervision to enhance their diagnostic and treatment skills, focus on development of their practice and build upon their existing knowledge base.
Supervision of supervision can also be provided for clinical supervisors who pursuing the Approved Supervisor Designation through the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. This supervision can be conducted individually or with two supervisors together.
